The Science Behind the HYPOXiX Method

When most people think about core training, they think about planks, crunches, sit-ups, or other abdominal exercises. Breathing rarely enters the conversation.

Yet every breath you take involves muscles that are intimately connected to the core, including the diaphragm, abdominal wall, pelvic floor, and muscles surrounding the spine. In many ways, breathing may be one of the most overlooked components of core function.

Over the last several years, my work as an exercise scientist, researcher, and personal trainer led me to explore a question that continues to fascinate me:

Can the way we breathe influence the way we move, stabilize, generate force, and recover?

The answer appears to be yes.

What I Found

Early in my coaching career, I noticed something remarkable.

What I found was that people didn't know how to fully exhale all of the air out of their lungs, which was limiting lung capacity and the ability to take a deep breath.

When the body holds onto air, the diaphragm cannot move freely. The rib cage often remains expanded, the abdominal wall struggles to fully engage, and many people compensate with excessive tension in the neck, shoulders, and lower back.

Learning to fully exhale changes everything. It resets the breath, creates more space for a deeper inhale, and wakes up the deep core in a way most people have never experienced.

The Core Is More Than Your Abs

Many people think of the core as simply the visible abdominal muscles. In reality, the core functions more like a pressurized cylinder.

  • The diaphragm sits at the top.
  • The pelvic floor sits at the bottom.
  • The abdominal muscles form the front and sides.
  • The muscles surrounding the spine form the back.

These structures work together to create stability during movement. Every time you lift a weight, stand from a chair, walk up stairs, or change direction, your body relies on this system to provide support and control.

As I continued teaching these concepts, I realized many people struggled to feel what a complete exhale should feel like. This led to the creation of the Ab-Ribbon®.

It's a simple tool that provides tactile feedback around the lower rib cage and abdominal wall so you can feel your ribs move down and inward.

Why Breathing Matters During Exercise

Many people unconsciously hold their breath, breathe rapidly through the chest, or lose control of their breathing during exercise. These patterns can increase tension, reduce movement efficiency, and make it more difficult to maintain proper positioning.

In contrast, controlled breathing can help create rhythm, improve awareness of trunk position, and encourage activation of muscles that contribute to spinal stability.

Research and Emerging Evidence

My own research examined how controlled breathing strategies influence physiological responses during exercise. Interestingly, participants performing exercise with a structured breathing protocol demonstrated lower heart rates and lower lactate responses despite experiencing intermittent oxygen desaturation.

While additional research is needed, these findings suggest that breathing may play a much larger role in exercise physiology than many people realize.

The Development of the HYPOXiX Method

These observations ultimately contributed to the development of the HYPOXiX Method.

HYPOXiX combines structured breathing patterns with functional movement, strength training, mobility work, and controlled exposure to physiological stress.

The goal is not simply to breathe differently. The goal is to improve the way the body coordinates breathing, movement, posture, and recovery. Participants learn how to integrate breathing into real-world movement patterns such as squats, lunges, walking, mobility exercises, and strength training. Rather than treating breathing as a separate practice, it becomes part of the movement itself.

A Different Way to Think About Core Training

The future of core training may not be about doing more repetitions or adding more resistance. It may involve improving how efficiently the body coordinates the systems that already exist.

Breathing is something we perform thousands of times every day. When we learn to use it more effectively, it may influence far more than oxygen intake alone. It may influence posture, movement quality, nervous system regulation, and overall performance.
